Mountain Dew Energy Reaches 250,000 "likes"
February 3rd 2012

quarter of a million

Less than 2 years after launching, Mountain Dew Energy has reached the milestone achievement of 250,000 likes on the official facebook page. While this is considerably less than the 6.5 million "likes" the American version of Mountain Dew has, its still impressive considering the relatively short amount of time the drink has been available.

Milestone reached

Only 14 months since launching, Mountain Dew Energy has reached the milestone achievement of 100,000 likes on the official facebook page. I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been supporting the brand and look forward to seeing it grow even more.

More Mountain Dew Reviews
July 9th 2011

Pitch Black - Slurpee - SuperNova - MelloYello

Every year I try to find a bottle of the latest version of Mountain Dew and post a review here. This year is no different as I try several new Mountain Dew products while in Honolulu.

darkness

MTN Dew Pitch Black  – Grape flavoured Mountain Dew originally released for the 2004 Halloween season.

This was an interesting one. All variants on the original Mountain Dew have that unique MD smoothness and that after taste tang which definitely helps this version.  Its dark purple in colour but just tastes of cheap cola with a slightly artificial grape after-taste. 6/10 For those of you that care, this photo was taken at the church that doubled as Oxford University in the TV show LOST.

slurpee

MTN Dew Slurpee -  A Mountain Dew flavoured slushie type drink. It is available exclusively at 7-Eleven stores

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. When buying this drink I knew it had been churning in one of those clear plastic drums for days, maybe even weeks (which is why I only bought a small) but it still tasted quite good. It's consistency is that of slightly melted ice cream and despite not being carbonated, still has a fizzy taste on the tongue. Its flavour resembles Mountain Dew quite closely and for that reason alone its worth trying. Recommended. 8/10.  For those of you that care, this photo was taken at the church that was used for Jack's dad's funeral in the final episode of the TV show LOST.

redness

MTN Dew SuperNova-  A diet only magenta coloured strawberry-melon flavoured Dew with ginseng

This tasted exactly as I expected. Strong artificial melon flavour with a sweet artificial strawberry after-taste. Being only available in a diet version means even the sweetness has a slight bitter side which is caused by the aspartame. Its just about palatable when cold but as it gets warmer, it soon becomes average. 5/10

melloyello

Mello Yello -  While not a Mountain Dew product, I thought it was relevant to be included here.

This has been called CocaCola's version of Mountain Dew. After some UK importers stopped selling US Dew (for reasons that still remain unclear), they started selling this as alternative. My Review - Tastes like Sprite when cold, slightly better when warmer (but not much). 3/10. End of review.

Mountain Dew Energy "Sugar Free" Announced
March 14th 2011

No sugar

The people at Mountain Dew Energy have announced a new variant that will be arriving soon. A diet verion of Mountain Dew Energy called "Mountain Dew Energy - Sugar Free" will be in shops by April. This is good news for fans as the range is apparently expanding due to the sucess of Mountain Dew Energy. If things carry on going well hopefully we will see additional flavours in the future as well. I'll upload a photo as soon as I find it at shop near me.

Does Mountain Dew Energy Taste Different From A Can?
March 14th 2011

Actually, it does

I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur regarding Mountain Dew. I have tried versions sold in America, Canada, Australia , New Zealand, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and almost every limited edition flavour sold in the US. Obviously the best is the "standard" American Mountain Dew (now sold as Mtn Dew) and this is the bar at which every other version is compared to.

As soon as Mountain Dew Energy was released in 440ml cans earlier this year, people on the Mountain Dew UK facebook group started to comment that it tasted different to the version sold in bottles. Some people even commented that it tasted "closer" to the American version. I was initially sceptical of such claims but more and more people began to say the same thing... or more specifically that it tasted different.

I was finally able to try a can of Mountain Dew Energy recently and I can confirm that it does indeed taste different, and in my opinion it does taste closer the the US Dew. I was so convinced that it was different that in a blind taste test I was able to tell the canned version from 5 other glasses of bottled Mountain Dew Energy.

The canned version is definitely stronger in citrus which is first noticeable with an intense lemon flavour, but more importantly it has that classic Mountain Dew tang after-taste, something that I thought the bottled version of Energy lacked.  It is definitely there in the can although not quite as strong as I would like. Imagine American Dew but diluted by about half. Its still slightly bitter and is no way near as smooth as the US Dew either.

After trying the canned version the bottled version almost tasted a bit "plasticy" in comparison which is odd considering they are suppose contain the same drink... or do they? While the ingredients listed on both the can and bottle are the same, the calorie content differs which could suggest the quantities of the listed ingredients have changed.

 bottlecalories  cancalories

(bottle on the left contains 118 calories per 250ml - can on the right contains 120 calories per 250ml)

Whatever the reason for the difference, I hope everyone will agree that this is a step in the right direction and that hopefully, one day, Mountain Dew Energy will taste exactly the same as the American Dew.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

American Dew withdrawn from the UK?
February 3rd 2011

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

As many of you know, the American version of Mountain Dew is quite different (and superior) to the one available in the UK. Because of this thousands of fans from across the country regularly buy imported American Mountain Dew from specialist retailers online, one of them being Americansoda.co.uk.

Details are still a little unclear but AmericanSoda have withdrawn the American Mountain Dew from sales on their website and posted this on their facebook group (click here) .

"American Soda: 'MTN' branded Mountain Dew does not conform to European Union Standards. Therefore, we have discountinued this product and complied fully - just as you would expect from a company like American Soda :D "

As you can imagine this is terrible news for die hard Mountain Dew fans. Why this has happened now is still a mystery as many companies having been selling it for years without issue.

I'll do my best to find out more information and post it here soon.

Dewmocracy 2 - My Review
July 17th 2010

and a shameless gloat of my recent hawaiian holiday

Recently while on holiday on the island of Oahu in Hawaii I had the opportunity to try all 3 new flavours of this summers Dewmocracy campaign which was entitled "DEWmocracy: Collective Intelligence". The flavours launched this year were better than those of the last campaign, but only just. Scroll down for the description of each flavour and my comments.

mdwhiteout

MTN Dew White Out (2010) – A white coloured citrus flavoured Dew.

When i first tried this flavour i initially couldn't describe what it tasted of. It is citrus flavoured but slightly bitter and not as sweet as regular Mountain Dew. After further consumption I concluded that It tastes very similar to a white "Smirnoff Ice" just without the alcohol bite and also with a slight hint of grapefruit. Imagine Mountain Dew flavoured Lemonade, but not the clear sparkling lemonade we have in the UK, rather cloudy lemonade made with real lemons that you get in the US. This was my favourite of the 3 flavours

It was announced on June 16, 2010 that White Out was the final winner; therefore, it will become a permanent addition. It will be officially released in October 2010.

mdtyphoon

MTN Dew Typhoon (2010) – A red orange coloured, tropical strawberry-pineapple flavoured Dew. It lost to MTN Dew White Out, and came in 2nd Place.

This was my second favourite too. I was pleasantly surprised with this one as most fruit sodas of this colour in the US taste very similar. They are often described as fruit punch flavoured but just taste of very artificial fruit flavours which are always overpowered by a fake cherry flavour. Anyone who has ever tried any of "Kool Aid's" drinks, specifically their "Hawaiian Punch" will know what i'm talking about. This was not the case with this drink though.

This tastes similar to "Fanta Exotic" but not quite as strong and not as sweet. You can definitely taste the "strawberrys", its smooth and has the classic Mountain Dew tang.

mddistortion

MTN Dew Distortion (2010) - A neon green coloured, lime flavoured Dew. It lost to MTN Dew White Out, and came in 3rd Place.

While initially this looks similar to regular mountain dew, the bottle is actually clear plastic so the colour you see is the colour of the drink. This was definitely my least favourite of the 3 as it just tasted like cheap limeade that you get in supermarkets in the UK, although with a slight Mountain Dew after taste.

Taco Bell opens in the UK
July 17th 2010

Mountain dew Baja Blast coming to the uk?

Taco Bell, the American fast food chain has finally come to the UK. The chain that specializes in Mexican style food serves tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos and other specialty items opened it's first new UK store at the Lakeside Shopping Centre on the 28th June 2010

tacobell

The above photo was taken at the Lakeside store in the UK on its opening day

As any Mountain Dew fan who has been to a Taco Bell restaurant in the US knows, Mountain Dew "Baja Blast" is sold exclusively in these chain of fast food outlets. Its is a tropical lime pineapple flavoured version of Mountain Dew that is greenish blue in colour.

bajablast

The official website for Taco Bell UK is here and the official Taco Bell UK facebook page here.

While Baja Blast is not currently being served at the restaurant in the UK, show your support for the chain and buy some food from them so Taco Bell will expand with new stores all over the UK.

Also mention when ordering your food how great it would be to have Baja blast in the UK. If enough of us do that, maybe one day we will get it over here too. After all, all the packaging the the UK store uses is imported from the US so it wouldn't be too difficult if they included some Beja Blast syrup in the package too would it?

Its Official! "Mountain Dew Energy" To Launch in the UK
April 19th 2010

Mountain dew energy coming this spring

After several rumours of a possible relaunch over the years we finally have the news we've all been waiting for. I've met with representatives from PepsiCo, had several phone calls and even tried a sample of the new UK version, and now, I can officially confirm that "Mountain Dew Energy" is set to launch in the UK this spring.

I was contacted by PepsiCo and told about the launch last year but was asked not to report the news until the product was developed further. As you can imagine I didn't want to risk jeopardising the launch so I respected PepsiCo’s request, but now that everything has been finalised I've finally been given the go ahead to report this fantastic news to you all.

Because so many of you contacted Pepsi, signed petitions and joined numerous facebook groups, they finally noticed that we want Mountain Dew and PepsiCo have responded in the best way possible. The new product is going to be called “Mountain Dew Energy” and will be entering into the energy drinks market at the end of April/early May and will initially only be available in bottles. Its going to contain more caffeine than the Mountain Dew we all know so hopefully this will aid in its popularity.

PepsiCo UK have decided (wisely) to stick with the American version of the logo but have added the word “Energy” at the bottom in Mountain Dew's distinctive green colour.

mountaindew

The colour of the actual drink its self is slightly different to the American version as you can see in this photo. Its more yellow than the greenish hue we are all used to. (American Dew on the left, UK on the right)

md comparison

They have also informed me that they now have an official UK Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/mountaindewuk and Twitter http://www.twitter.com/dewenergyuk so tell all your friends, spread the word and head on over there to show your support and join up. You wanted it, and they are bringing it, so lets make sure its here to stay this time!

As a Thank You to all the loyal Mountain Dew UK fans, Pepsico have also sent me 50 x 6 packs to give away as prizes to you guys.

I am making it easy to win because it's been a long time coming.

TO WIN just:

1. Send me an email with: "COUNT ME IN" as the subject

2. Tell me how happy you are (bit of fun)

3. Provide your postal address

I will pick 50 people at random on April 26th 2010 and let you know if you have won. Also don't forget the sign up to my newsletter as this will contain a list of the winners after they have been selected.

They have told me they have got plenty of prizes and more importantly plenty of Mountain Dew Energy to give away so head over to facebook or twitter for a chance to win.

Finally, I would also like to thank all the fans of Mountain Dew in the UK who have contacted me since I started this website back in 2003. Your support and encouragement really helped keep this site alive and now, after more than 10 years, we at last have our favourite drink back in the UK!

Greenpod Starts Selling Mountain Dew
December 16th 2009

using the original Mountain dew website

For years the original UK Mountain Dew website (www.mountaindew.co.uk) has been dormant with nothing more than generic adverts on display. Recently however the owners of the domain "mountaindew.co.uk" have brought the website back to life. The current owners (Greenpod - who are not affiliated with Pepsi in any way) bought the domain many years ago after its registration lapsed and it became available. Greenpod is primarily a "manufacturer of planet friendly office consumable products" but while there is no connection between their office supply shop and Mountain Dew, any new supplier of Mountain Dew is welcome. Check out www.mountaindew.co.uk for more information.

What To Buy A Mountain Dew Fan for Christmas?
December 16th 2009

Apart from more mountain dew of course

It was recently brought to my attention that the UK highstreet store "Topman" are selling "old style" Mountain Dew T-Shirts. This long-term logo was used in the 1970s & 1980s and in the early 1990s as a "retro" logo until 1995 in the US. It was also used in 2009 for the "Mountain Dew Throwback" limited edition version of the soft drink. It does seem odd considering Mountain Dew isnt widely available in the UK but I suspect that surplus stock from the US Topman store has found its way onto the UK website. For the modest sum of £18 this T-Shirt can be yours. Go to www.topman.com and then search for "Mountain Dew" in the search bar to find the T-Shirt.

Mountain Dew Goes UltraViolet

Diet mountain dew ultraviolet

Mountain Dew has launched its first ever Diet only flavour. Ultra Violet launched in mid August and will be test marketed for 3 months. The purple carbonated diet soft drink is a mixed berry flavoured Diet Mountain Dew and is branded as having zero calories. Reports suggest that “it has a taste similar to Mountain Dew Revolution, but has a new formula”.

GameFuel Returns
July 11th 2009

For the summer at least

Mountain Dew GameFuel is returning for the summer. We last saw GameFuel back in August of 2007 to promote the release of Halo 3 for the XBOX 360. The current flavours include: Mountain Dew Game Fuel Horde Red which is a limited edition of the original cherry-citrus flavour that was released as a promotion with World of Warcraft. Also Mountain Dew Game Fuel Alliance Blue which is a limited edition Wild Berry flavoured version, again released as a promotion with World of Warcraft.

I haven't tried these new versions, but I did try the original GameFuel back in 2008 and it wasn't that great. Unless you can find it extremely cheap through the normal channels, I would give it a miss.

Mountain Dew Launches Throwback
May 17th 2009

Using sugar instead of corn syrup

A new limited edition version of Mountain Dew called "Mountain Dew Throwback" has been released. It will be available for 8 weeks and according to reports tastes quite different to regular Mountain Dew. It uses a vintage logo design reminiscent of the one used in 80’s and uses cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup (also known as glucose-fructose syrup in the UK).

I’ll try and taste some of this new version and post my opinion as soon as possible.

Asda stocks Mountain Dew
February 27th 2009

Well.... kind of

I was recently contacted by email and informed that Mountain Dew was now available in Asda. I initially took the information with a pinch of salt but was soon able to find and contact someone who actually bought some. They confirmed to me that Asda now stocks cans at 50p each... well, the one in Slough does at least.

While this is great news, this isn’t quite the massive re-launch that I had first thought. On further investigation it appears that certain chains of Asda have “International Food” sections which stock items not normally found in this country. The branch of Asda in Slough apparently has a Polish food section and this is where the Dew was discovered.

Unfortunately its not the version made by Pepsico in the USA, or even from Britvic in the UK, but has what appears to be Russian typeface so it’s a little hard to be sure where exactly it was made. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, some versions of Mountain Dew I’ve tried made in different parts of the world can taste very different to the “official” version that we all love so much.

I’ve seen “International Food” sections in supermarkets other than Asda, so perhaps from now on, if you are in your local Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose etc, it might be worth checking as you never know where you might find some. If you do find any in your local supermarket, please email me a photo and tell me which branch it was purchased from.

As for news on an official re-launch, news is still pretty thin on the ground. I’ve received some conflicting reports but its still too early to know for sure. I think we wont be seeing it until Pepsi rollout their new logo on all their products, or shortly there after.

As always, as soon as I get any new information, I’ll either post it here, or send out a newsletter.

MTN DEW LOGO "TWEAKED"
January 4th 2009

Slight Change

Pepsico have changed the new logo once again. Apparently the new "abbreviated logo" (which can be seen in the December 16th news entry) wasn't fitting in with the established branding and has been altered it to the image below. Maybe this will be the logo for the UK launch.

MOUNTAIN DEW TO RETURN TO THE UK!!!!
December 18th 2008

SUCCESS!!

From: http://www.marketingmagazine.co.uk/news/855193/Pepsi-rolls-700m-global-brand-makeover

LONDON - Pepsi has unveiled a new-look logo as part of a radical $1.2bn (£700m) global brand revamp ahead of plans to launch its US brands Mountain Dew and Sierra Mist in the UK.

The brand's red and blue globe icon was created in the 50s. The company now wants it to portray a series of 'smiles' on packaging across the portfolio.

PepsiCo says that the Diet Pepsi logo has a 'slight grin', Pepsi's a 'full smile', while that for Pepsi Max expresses laughter. The font accompanying the logo will shift from a bold upper-case to a retro lower-case format, with the 'e' mimicking the white curve of the classic logo.

The planned launch of Mountain Dew and Sierra Mist will cast doubt on the future of PepsiCo's 7-Up brand in the UK market.

Citrus-flavoured Mountain Dew, which has been renamed Mtn Dew, has been available in the UK before; it was launched in 1996 but dropped in 1998 following poor sales. In the US, the brand targets the youth market through its associations with extreme sports and computer games.

New Logo Revealed
December 16th 2008

coming soon

Here is the new Mountain Dew Logo that will start appearing early next year. It is very different from what we've seen with previous designs, this time with the word "mountain" abbreviated to just "mtn". Although the green, white and red colour palette remains, the overall feel of the new design seems more subdued, and will be interesting to see how it will fit in with Pepsi's extreme sports marketing angle.

Big Change Ahead
October 11th 2008

New mountain dew logo appearing in january

From the Associated Press:

PepsiCo, the nation's second-largest beverage company, said Friday it is launching a marketing campaign to refocus attention on soft drinks, which have seen lagging sales as demand shifted to bottled water, energy drinks and juices. Carbonated soft drinks are "an important part of the franchise," Chief Executive Indra Nooyi told the trade publication Beverage Digest. "This is a multiyear commitment. We realise we have to stick with it, and the identity change is just the first step," she said. The company plans new logos for Pepsi, Mountain Dew and Sierra Mist in the first phase of a multiyear campaign, which is scheduled to launch in January

This should be interesting to see, but judging from the redesigns over the previous years, the logo probably won't change much. I'll post a picture here of the new logo as soon as its revealed.

Dewmocracy - My Verdict
October 8th 2008

Just stick with regular mountain dew

On a recent holiday to Hawaii i checked out the 3 new Dewmocracy flavours. For all you UK fans that have yet to try them, dont fret, you aren't missing much.

Supernova is a strawberry and melon flavoured concoction that tastes very similar to limited edition "GameFuel" that was around last summer. Sickly sweet with an artificial strawberry flavour, Supernova was my least favourite of the 3.

Voltage (which was the overall winner of the Dewmocracy voting) was probably my favourite as well. Not as sweet as the other 2 and with only a mild raspberry after taste, it was definitely the one i could drink the most of without feeling like i had just had my daily sugar allowance in one mouth full.

Revolution looks similar to Voltage both in colour and in flavour but the taste could not be further from it. I could only drink about a third of the bottle of this "wild berry" version and had to tip the rest away. To me it just tasted like cheap fruit flavour sweets you can buy 100 of for £1 at discount shops but with that classic Mountain Dew after taste tang.

If any of you get a chance to try any of these flavours, i'd be interested to hear your comments.... be quick though, as only Voltage will be around for the long term.

Amp Expanding Range of Flavours
February 14th 2008

Orange and Grape flavours arriving in the spring

Inside information has revealed that "Amp", the Mountain Dew energy drink, will be releasing two new flavours this coming spring. Orange (most likely to be similar in taste to the already established "Live Wire") and grape. Availability and pricing is yet to be determined, but UK fans, expect to see the new versions appearing on UK suppliers website's and on ebay soon.

Pepsico Still Going Strong
January 20th 2008

Pepsi continues to prosper

"We all know the soft drink giant owns popular brands like Pepsi, Mountain Dew and Gatorade, the perfect complement to a snack food portfolio that includes Frito Lay (Walkers crisps in the UK), Ruffles and Doritos. However, you may not realise what those brands mean in dollars and cents...

Over the past year, PepsiCo has raked in $37 billion in sales. Pepsi has continued to prosper, particularly overseas where revenue and operating income both jumped around 20% last quarter".

Im sure their overseas sales would be higher if a certain product of theirs was widely available in the UK. I'll let you guess which one. For more information on the business side of Pepsico, click here

Soft Drink will be Offered in Aluminum Bottle in U.S
January 6th 2008

'Green Label Art' to Feature 12 Unique Designs

Beginning January 28th, Mountain Dew will be available in metal bottles in the US. A 16-oz. bottle will cost $1.99 versus $1.19 for a regular 20-oz. plastic bottle. The new bottles (several hundred thousands of which will be offered) will be touted online, via wild postings and print advertising. Aluminum bottles offer enhanced graphic capabilities and the ability to keep beverages colder, albeit at a cost. They cost roughly three times that of glass.

But, the premium packaging has its benefits. “The bottles stay colder longer and look cool as hell,” said Michael Sands, the former Snapple CMO who was the first to introduce an aluminum bottle in the U.S. UK fans should be able to find these bottles for sale online on websites like ebay from the start of February.

A second set of six limited edition bottles will be available at retail in August 2008. http://greenlabelart.com/

DEWmocracy Goes Live!
November 3rd 2007

Its up to you

As reported in October, a new website has been launched that will allow you, the Mountain Dew fan to decide on a new flavour. Everything from the colour, logo, label, tag-line and taste is decided by you. At the end of Dewmocracy event the best new creation will be released into the real world and will be available for purchase. For UK fans, your best chances of buying the new version will probably be ebay.com.  I have had some UK fans contact me asking about the availability of Game Fuel in the UK and so far ebay has been the only place that i have found that will sell and ship to the UK.

Mountain Dew Game Fuel - Halo 3
October 1st 2007

NEW FLAVOUR LAUNCHED

To coincide with the launch of the XBOX 360 video game "Halo 3", a new limited edition Mountain Dew flavour was launched. Its similar to "Code Red" but far, far sweeter...also with a slight sherbet candy after taste. It was so sweet however that i couldn’t even finish the small bottle i purchased. UK Halo 3 fans will probably encounter this new flavour when reading about or playing the game online.

From CNN:

"Mountain Dew's sponsorship of pro video gaming, or e-sports, is a natural extension of the brand's support of action sports, says Frank Cooper, vice president of marketing for Pepsi-Cola North America, a unit of PepsiCo. "Mountain Dew has always represented intensity," Cooper said. "Dew and gaming complement each other. People like Dew because it keeps them focused, it tastes great and it fits with their lifestyle." Mountain Dew also has worked with Microsoft to promote product launches such as the Xbox 360 console and games "Halo 2" and "Halo 3."

Mountain Dew In The Desert
September 23rd 2007

MOUNTAIN DEW REALLY IS EVERYWHERE

On a recent trip to the Arizona desert i found myself at this little shack in the middle of nowhere. Even in this secluded place, Mountain Dew was available for purchase (although at a 50% premium along with everything else). With brand distribution like that, i still find it amazing that its not sold in UK supermarkets. (Please excuse the poor quality of the photo. I took it on my phone through the window of a coach)

Mountain Dew Vending Machine Transformer
August 1st 2007

THE DEW BOT

Go see "The Transformers" movie and  keep an eye out for a Mountain Dew vending machine that gets turned into a Transformer. Below is the concept design which is very similar to how it looks in the movie. Again, the UK public are exposed to Mountain Dew but are unable to buy it.
